Tokoroa Fly-in 11th July 2010

This weekend Just gone, myself and my daughter drove over to Tokoroa for an impromptu fly-in , organised on the Parkflyers site as a preliminary to a Pro-Bro event later in the year.

Note : a Pro-Bro (short for Profile Brotherhood) website here is a gathering of guys who just want to fly 3D, normaly profile fuselage planes, no flying in circles (called ‘CJ flyers”), planes get up to all sorts of cool tricks, and the guys have allot of fun.

Anyway , we drove over, leaving Hawera at 5am, arriving at Tokoroa just on 9am, the drive was frosty, -7 thru bennydale.

Chris J, Siang and Gordon all drove down from Auckland, Heather and Ian from WattsUp in Hastings drove over as well, and we all met up with the local SWMAC club members

Great day, few crashes (me), great combat flying (superflys and Yaks), 3D action, one turbine jet, some very fast ritewings and hotliers/pylon racers.

I also had 3 flights on the AT40 trainer, with 1400 watts of electric power, couldnt keep up with Bruces nitro powered AT40, theres always next time

Customer Review – IYF44 built by KiwiRC

Not so long ago I bought an IYF off Mat from KiwiRC (matwelli on the forum). I took up his free build offer because my building skills are abysmal. Mat has put up the build process over here for those who are interested. Click Here.

Being quite new to wings, and just getting back into the hobby I had a lot of questions. A quick check of Gmail shows we have exchanged 88 emails since the beginning of May. Mat has always answered all of my questions quickly and he’s given me a lot of advice which I am really grateful for.

Onto the wing itself; it arrived via courier in a massive box, carefully packaged. I had been following the build process here on the forums, but the first thought I had was how big the wing is. Mat kindly loaned me his gear: an AR500, MD 2900kv motor, 40/50Amp ESC and BEC so I didn’t have to wait for the slow boat from China/and the US for my MD motor. After binding my TX to the AR500 and following the TX instructions Mat put up in the build thread I went down to LEP.

It was pretty windy that day, maybe 15 km/h and a bit gusty. I probably wouldn’t have got out the Parkzone planes in that wind, but Mat’s emails had promised exceptional wind performance, after all flying on windy days was the whole point =). So after doing the pre-flight, I hit the throttle and launched the wing into the air. The scream of the MD motor with the 6×4 prop pierced the silence at LEP. I didn’t even notice the wind at all, flying was a breeze. The wing really can move, much faster than the T28 or Corsair and real quick it was nearly down to a dot. Quickly I brought her back around and attempted a landing. On the final turn before approach I gave too much elevator and stalled leading to a spiral into the dirt. Most of the way across the fields, the IYF was on the grass and nobody could have been the wiser. I was expecting at least a wingtip to have broken off, but no. Everything was pristine, bar some mud on the underside. Thus ended the IYF maiden.

Since then I have had about 15 flights and am impressed with the capabilities of the wing. I have put in my own gear bar the motor as mine is on its way. The IYF is really tough, goes fast and can slow down well (when you don’t give full elevator with no throttle). Now I can fly slowly around the park marginally faster than my floaty Corsair or much much faster if I engage the MD. =)

Really happy with everything, and Mat has been a great help.

37.5″ Demon Ritewing Maiden

Well, maiden time (finally)
The servos have been replaced (one failed on Jacko).
Motor test run, amps are down a bit on max, mid 30′s on the 6 by 4, this motor is designed to run a 7 by 4.

Lets set the scene.
Last of the rain has just finished, it started at 9:30 am, its now 10:45 am.
Bit of a breeze
Friggin cold
The sky on one side is black, hard to see and the landing aproach is filled with the sun, perfect.

Mikey B is with me, launch here, she rolls left and climbs, do a few circuits, trimming, trimming, woohoo shes flying level.

My throws on low rates are still heaps, I find i am moving the stick 5mm from centre = 1mm at the elevons ! for normal flying.

1/2 throttle only, cant see this thing head on with the bad light, suprisingly the yellow/black bottom is just black, the silver/red top also looks black – perfect.

Punch full noise and point straight up, 399 feet or so, chop throttle and do a couple of power of circuits, after diving 200 ft……man this thing is fast, power off she would keep up with the lightning 48 ! (well almost )

Time for landing, fly out to the right…..fly into the sun !!!…call out to mike “cant see it”, “neither can I ” he replys, just hold on untill she is in view 2 seconds later…..swing her around for the aproach, to high, too fast , power back on and climb……..OK lets not do that again we decide on a cross wind landing so as not to fly past the sun sgain.

Comming in from the left, 150 ft up or so, maybe 500 ft out chop throttle…….too fast, come around again…..this time chop throttle before final aproach and grease her in, land on the strip,covered in mud from the worm holes

loved every second of the 4 minute flight, dident get to relax at all – show this one alot of respect.
